| Encourage your students to do their best. Train your students to develop strong study habits, such as the discipline of studying at the same time and place as well as having the necessary materials to complete assignments. Begin training your children to correctly use search engines with parental controls. Encourage your children to speak with adults such as relatives, physicians, librarians or family friends who have interesting jobs. Students should ask them, “What do you like about your job?” and “What education did you need for your job?” Take your students to your local library regularly. Allow your students to visit the web site www.kids.gov and www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/5-8/career/index.html to learn about jobs and careers. Talk to your students about their interests and abilities as they grow, and guide them to link these traits to a career. Check out the Kids’ Zone at www.nces.ed.gov for games, puzzles, and math teasers. Review basic math facts on a regular basis. Strong skills in math facts will help your students with Algebra. Read aloud to your students at least 30 minutes per day from chapter books and read Helping your Child Become A Reader at www.ed.gov/parents. Follow your student’s progress by administering the CAT test yearly. (Free and available with enrollment in GCS) Include daily chores with responsibilities in your home routines. Chores that contribute to the successful running of your family unit build self worth and strong work ethics in children. Become involved in school or community service activities as a family. Children will learn leadership skills and empathy through new experiences. |
